Louise-with-Book1There’s a new book in town – “Images of America – KALAMA”.

Two weeks before the City’s 125th anniversary last year, consideration was given to republishing the book put together by Vi Johnson and the Kalama Centennial Celebration Committee.  Instead, it was decided to undertake a project of collecting old photographs from residents of Kalama and produce a new book.  The City Librarian, Louise Thomas, contacted Arcadia Publishing, a company which specializes in publishing books on small communities, and AMALAK agreed to sponsor the project.

During the months following the 125th anniversary, pictures of Kalama’s history were collected.  Louise sorted through over 500 pictures brought in by Kalama residents.  Kalama has a special place in Louise’s heritage.  Her grandfather lived here in 1896 and was married here in 1898.  He then moved to Carrollton, which is now Carrolls, and opened a blacksmith shop.

The book “Images of America – KALAMA” is available at City Hall, Double Ds, or AMALAK and the cost is $23.68.  Louise indicated the book is not complete and believes there is enough information out there to publish a second book.  If you have any pictures from Kalama’s history - the train, gold mine, hanging tree – whatever you have – bring it to the Library or City Hall.  In the meantime you will want to get your copy or the new book before they sell out!
